The Los Angeles Lakers avoided disaster for the 2nd year in a row by nabbing the number two pick in the NBA Draft and as a result not having to fork over their pick to the Philadelphia 76ers which they owe as part of the Steve Nash trade they completed with the Phoenix Suns back in 2012.
The 2016 NBA Draft Lottery went chalk with no teams moving from their slotted position in the lottery. The Philadelphia, who had the NBA’s worst record last season and had the best odds to get the top pick will pick first in the upcoming draft.
The consensus of NBA draft analyst have LSU’s forward Ben Simmons and Duke’s lanky, sweet shooting forward Brandon Ingram as the overwhelming favorites as the top 2 picks in the upcoming draft meaning it is likely that one of them will be sporting the purple and gold next season.
Ben Simmons is listed as the top pick in most mock drafts at present time. Simmons is a hybrid forward that has a high basketball IQ, handles and good athleticism for a guy 6-9 and 240 lbs. The knocks on Simmons is his lack of competitive spirit and questionable outside shot which would make a pairing with Julius Randle less than ideal.
Brandon Ingram is a long, athletic forward who has an elite shot-making ability from anywhere on the court and has been compared to Kevin Durant due to body type and game. Ingram is rail thin and will need to fill out which could take years for him to reach his full potential.
Either way, the Lakers are beyond ecstatic to take either player that is remaining as there is quite a bit of separation from Ingram and Simmons to the rest of the draft class in terms of projected potential.
The 2016 NBA Draft will take place on June 23rd in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Centers and will be aired on ESPN.
