Apparently the rest of the league is not as high on Robert Upshaw as many Lakers’ fans were as all 29 NBA teams passed on putting in a waiver claim which allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent on Thursday.
With Upshaw not garnering any interest from the rest of the league his next move will be to sign with the Lakers’ D-league affiliate the D-Fenders, per reports.

NBA teams continue to stay far away from Upshaw, passing on him in the NBA draft and again through the waiver process which is puzzling for those only privy to what we see with our own eyes which is a player with pretty impressive set of skills and size.
Upshaw came into the NBA with a troubled pass having been kicked off two college programs in two years before making himself eligible for the draft. It appeared that he was making strides in turning his life around, showing improved work ethic and commitment by arriving at Lakers training camp 20 pounds lighter than his weight in Summer League.
The fact that Upshaw did not have a great showing in Preseason outside of some flashes and his questionable history is what keeps him from being seen as worth the gamble for NBA teams.
The Lakers get another look at Upshaw and a chance to see if he can both develop his skills and continue to stay out of trouble during his time in with the D-Fenders who start their season on November 13th.
If Upshaw can show the promise that many see he can attain the Lakers can always open up a roster spot on the NBA team and sign him later in the season; however, that also means that any other NBA team is free to sign Upshaw as well.
