Klay Thompson scores 37 in the 3rd and sets new NBA record

It was an historic night for Klay Thompson who went off for 37 points in the 3rd quarter, shattering the NBA record for most points in a quarter which was held for 37 years by George Gervin.

Thompson entered the proverbial zone in the 3rd, but he didn’t start there, going 3 for 9 from the field and scoring 13 points in the first half in which his Warriors held a precarious 56-51 lead over the Sacramento Kings. Then, Thompson erupted for a 3rd quarter of epic proportions, shooting 13 for 13 field which included 9 for 9 from 3 point range and adding 2 for 2 from the free throw line to complete a literally perfect quarter.

Not even Kobe Bryant, who has an 81 point game and scored 62 in 3 quarters on his resume can stake claim to the level of unconsciousness that Thompson experienced Friday night.

Bryant’s record for most points in a quarter is 30 which he scored in the 3rd quarter of a game against the Utah Jazz on November 30, 2006.

The most recent performance that comes close to Thompson’s scorching hot 3rd quarter comes from Carmelo Anthony, who played for the Denver Nuggets at the time, scored 33 points in the 3rd quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 10, 2008.

Thompson’s father and current Lakers’ color commentator for radio, Mychal Thompson, who was a great player in his own right during his playing days, who won a couple of championships with the Showtime Lakers in the late 80’s, but he  never approached anywhere near the scoring heights in a quarter that his son reached Friday night. In fact, Mychal Thompson has only had two full games in his 13 year career that surpassed his son’s Klay 37 points in 1 quarter: 40 points in a playoff game against the Kansas City Kings on April 3, 1981 and 38 points in a regular season game against the Los Angeles Lakers on December 11, 1981, both games while playing for the Portland Trailblazers.

Klay Thompson finished with a career high 52 points and his team won the game, beating the Sacramento Kings 126-101.

It was a great night for Klay Thompson, the Thompson family, Golden State Warriors and the NBA. To commemorate we created a a 15 second video clip on Instagram that shows all of Thompson’s 37 points in the historic 3rd quarter. Enjoy.
