2014 NBA Free Agent Market Open for Business – Complete List

When the clock struck 12 midnight on the east coast, it signaled the start of the 2014 NBA free agent season. This year’s free agent class is one of the deepest in talent in the history of the NBA, highlighted by Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony.

If a team misses out on one of the elite, maximum contract types, there are still plenty of 2nd tier free agents that can be a major piece to a championship contending team, such as Trevor Ariza, Greg Monroe, Lance Stevenson and Kyle Lowry.

While there’s an abundance of talent up for grabs this off-season, there are only a few teams that have substantial cap space to really capitalize; The Lakers, 76ers, Jazz, Suns, Mavericks, Hornets and Pistons are the teams with over 20 million of available cap space (not including cap holds for unsigned free agents.) The Miami Heat nearly cleared their entire salary for the upcoming season with all of the big 3 terminating their deals and becoming free agents; however, by all indications, all 3 will be re-signed to new deals.

We put together a comprehensive list of the free agents that will are now available to all and placed them into 5 groups which are divided by their projected salary for next season:

Restricted: Current team can match contract and retain player

Unrestricted: Player free to sign with any team. Current team cannot match.

Tier 1 Free Agents: Maximum Contract Players

(14 to 20+ million per year)

1. Lebron James – Miami Heat – Forward – Unrestricted

2. Carmelo Anthony – New York Knicks – Forward – Unrestricted

3. Chris Bosh – Miami Heat – Forward – Unrestricted

4. Dirk Nowitzki – Dallas Mavericks -Forward – Unrestricted

Nowitzki agreed to a 3 year/30+ mill. contract extension with Mavericks

5. Eric Bledsoe – Phoenix Suns – Point Guard – Restricted

6. Greg Monroe – Detroit Pistons – Forward/Center – Restricted

  • Very small group of players that can command a max contract. James, Nowitzki and Bosh are all expected to re-sign with with their respective teams and the Suns have stated publicly that they would match any offer for restricted free agent, Eric Bledsoe which would be in the neighborhood of 14 million per year to start. Greg Monroe will likely get a max offer and while he’s a restricted free agent, his team, the Pistons, are less likely to match since they have a bit of congestion in the front court with Josh Smith who they just signed to a 4 year, 54 million dollar contract, and the very promising, Andre Drummond.

Tier 2 Free Agents: Double Digit Group

(10 to 13 million per year)

1. Kyle Lowry – Toronto Raptors – Point Guard – Unrestricted

Lowry commited to re-sign with Toronto for 4 years/48 million

2. Dwayne Wade – Miami Heat – Guard – Unrestricted

3. Luol Deng – Cleveland Cavs – Forward – Unrestricted

4. Lance Stevenson – Indiana Pacers – Guard – Unrestricted

  • An even smaller group are those that will get contracts just below max deals. Kyle Lowry’s value really shot up during the playoffs where he averaged 21.1 points in 7 games for the Raptors. Conversely, Lance Stevenson probably dropped in value after his antics in the Heat-Pacers conference final series where he tried to irritate Lebron James by way of acts such as blowing in his ear and laying cheap shots; in the process, he seemed to irriate everybody else as well, including former NBA players, the media and maybe even some of his own teammates. Luol Deng turned down a contract extension of 3 years/30 million dollars so he is likely to seek a contract of at least that much in free agency.

Tier 3 Free Agents: Above MLE Group

(5.4 to 9 million per year)

1. Chandler Parsons – Houston Rockets – Forward – Restricted

2. Pau Gasol – L.A. Lakers – Forward/Center – Unrestricted

3. Gordan Hayward – Utah Jazz – Foward – Restricted

Hayward signed offer sheet w/ Hornets. Jazz have right to match.

4. Marcin Gortat – Washington Wizards – Center – Unrestricted

Gortat commited to re-sign with Washington Wizards for 5 years/60 million.

5. Pau Pierce – Brooklyn Nets – Foward – Unrestricted

6. Trevor Ariza – Washington Wizards – Forward – Unrestricted

7. Isaiah Thomas – Sacramento Kings – Point Guard – Restricted

  • Most players in this group are expected to stay with their respective clubs, but it should get interesting if some of the restricted free agents like Chandler Parsons and Isaiah Thomas get offer sheets since both of their clubs have massive contracts committed to other players which might make them think twice about matching. The Wizards are looking to bring back both Gortat and Ariza and will likely utilize their bird rights to exceed the salary cap to make their offer too savory for either to refuse.
