Breaking News: Mike D’Antoni Resigns as Head Coach

As reported by Mark Medina of the L.A. Daily News, Mike D’Antoni has resigned as the Los Angeles Coach, citing “insurmountable impasse” as the reason.

Official Lakers Release:

It had been reported previously that Mike D’Antoni was seeking assurances from the Lakers brass that they would pick up the 4th year option of his contract in order to avoid the lame duck status for the coming season. Apparently, D’Antoni was unable to get those assurances and decided to step down with a guaranteed year still remaining on his contract.

Now the Lakers will begin the search for his replacement. A few names that are out there and currently available are Kurt Rambis, Byron Scott, George Karl, Lionel Hollins and Jerry Sloan. An outside the box option would be former Laker and current Oklahoma City Thunder, Derek Fisher, who had stated this would likely be his final season.

The Lakers could also wait until after the playoffs are completed in the event that any of the current coaches are let go and suddenly become available. Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel and Golden State Warriors Mark Jackson have all been rumored to be on thin ice in their current positions and that their fate is highly dependent on succeeding in the playoffs.
