NBA Commissioner Adam Silver came down on Clippers owner Donald T. Sterling as hard as his powers allowed today in his press conference to announce his decision regarding the racially charged audio tapes released by TMZ.

Silver’s decision:

  • Donald T. Sterling is banned for life from any association with the Los Angeles Clippers or NBA.
  • Fined 2.5 million dollars.
  • Will urge Board of Governors to exercise its authority to force a sale of the team.

The decision came down hard and quickly, appeasing all parties concerned, most notably the players who could potentially have staged a boycott if the response was unsatisfactory.

The decision got the vote of approval from Sacramento Mayor and former player Kevin Johnson who is acting as the NBA Player’s Association leader in place of Chris Paul who currently has his attention on beating the Golden State Warriors in their 1st round series.

“The players spoke, they acted, and they were listened to,” said Johnson. “On this day, Adam Silver is not only the owners’ commissioner, he is the players’ commissioner and we’re proud to call him our commissioner.”

As to the next step of completely removing Donald T. Sterling as the owner of the Clippers, that will take time as Silver explained the process.

“As for Mr. Sterling’s ownership interest in the Clippers,” Silver said. “I will urge the board of governors to force a sale of the team and will do everything in my power to ensure that happens.”

Silver explained the votes needed to begin the process of removing Sterling and forcing the sale of the team.

“The owners have the authority subject to three-quarters vote, to remove him as owner,” Silver said.

When Silver was asked if he believes he will get the support of the other NBA owners in voting to force the sale of the Clippers Silver responded confidently that he will receive such support.

This hopefully puts an end to the drama created outside of the actual basketball that is being played on the court and in the arenas which if anybody has noticed has been pretty damn good.
