We continue our coverage of college prospects for the upcoming 2014 NBA Draft which is set to take place on June 26, 2014. This week we take a look at Michigan’s sharp shooter, Nik Stauskas.

Raining3s’ 2014 NBA Draft Evaluation: Nik Stauskas
Nik Stauskas is a 6-6 shooting guard. Stauskas is one of the true elite shooters in the draft. He has unlimited range, a super-quick release, and as a bonus, he can play point guard in a pinch.
Nik Stauskas is a surprisingly super athletic player for a white guy (and I am white). He has a tremendous vertical, he has a super quick first step and can blow-by any defender that guards him and can get his shot off at will.
Stauskas is a playmaker. He has a high basketball IQ and passing instincts that help complete the offensive package. Stauskas averaged closes to 3.5 assists per game, showing a tremendous feel as a playmaker, something in which he wasn’t initially pegged.
Outside shooting ability:
Stauskas has proved to be one of the most lethal shooters in college basketball. He has a lightning-quick release and has also shown an ability to handle the ball and play point on occasion.
Ability to get his own shot:
Stauskas can get his own shot anytime he wants. He can score from 3’s, at the rim, the free-throw line and pretty much anywhere in the gym. He has created some very impressive YouTube videos to demonstrate this such as his 37 3’s in a few minutes.
Stauskas may have a tough time staying in front of defenders at the next level due to his lack of lateral quickness. Things tend to get even trickier for him when faced with a screen and it often seems like he looks to fight through picks rather than go around them and vice versa. He also doesn’t have the kind of big, physical frame that one might need to disrupt the NBA’s stronger prototypical guards.
Basketball IQ and intangibles:
Stauskas has a great basketball IQ. He rarely turns the ball over and always gets a good shot off; it never seems forced. Stauskas is also an excellent passer and at times is very unselfish; he can get 5 or more assists a game.
Projected position in the NBA:
Stauskas will most likely be a 2 guard in the NBA or he can possibly be a shoot first point guard. Stauskas has great ball handling skills as we have seen from his You Tube videos. I believe that Stauskas can find a niche in the NBA and be a long time role player like a Steve Kerr, Mike Dunleavy, Jeff Hornacek, and other NBA specialists who can stroke the 3. However, like I said before, Stauskas is a freak athlete and unlike those aforementioned can really get to the rim and shoot 3’s which makes him unguardable. He eventually has the ability to be an NBA All-Star but I think he will need to be paired up with a Kevin Love, Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan, or other big man to warrant some double teams.
Projected draft position:
I think because of the reputation of the white basketball player Stauskas will be a mid to late teen pick. It’s possible that he could go higher but most likely it will be the mid-late teens.
Comparable NBA player:
Nik Stauskas reminds me of Kevin Martin. They both can shoot lights out from downtown and are very good at creating their own shot. I don’t know if Stauskas can be a 20 point scorer night in night out like Martin, but Stauskas is a little more athletic. Stauskas and Martin both take the night off defensively sometimes but when you can score in quick flashes sometimes your defense is overlooked.
